Failing health of jailed activist prompts call for release

Nargess Mohammadi

Ahmad Montazeri, the son of the late dissident cleric Ayatollah Montazeri, has raised alarms about the declining health of jailed human rights activist Nargess Mohammadi.

The Melli Mazhabi website reports that Ahmad Montazeri is calling on judiciary officials to release Mohammadi before she suffers a “catastrophic” blow.

Mohammadi, an activist and member of several human rights organizations including the Campaign to End the Death Penalty, was returned to Evin Prison in May to serve out a six-year jail term from which she had been previously exempted for health reasons.

Earlier this month, she was transferred to hospital for complications from paresis but she was then returned to prison against the recommendation of the attending physicians.

Ahmad Montazeri warns that if anything happens to Mohammadi in jail, “all government officials will be held accountable both to God and the public”.

Mohammadi suffers from a pulmonary embolism as well as paresis, and the prison conditions have exacerbated her symptoms.

Mohammadi is to be tried on further charges related to her activism, but her trial was adjourned last month with no reason given.
