Esmail Gerami Moghaddam, the spokesman for the National Trust Party, was arrested upon arrival at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Airport.
The Youth Branch of the National Trust Party reports on its website that Gerami Moghaddam was arrested on Friday July 17 upon arrival in Iran. He had left Iran after the election protests of 2009, which led to the widespread arrest and exodus of numerous supporters of the Green Movement, which had supported the candidates who challenged the legitimacy of the presidential election. He has been living in Malaysia.
Gerami Moghaddam has also served as an MP in the past and was known as one of the top aides to presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi, who has been under house arrest since 2011 for his role in igniting the 2009 mass protests.
Gerami Moghaddam has reportedly lost his sight due to the progressive effects of injuries from the Iraq-Iraq War in the 1980s.
