The head of the Iranian Teachers’ Association, Esmail Abdi, was arrested when he reported to court in response to a summons.
The Kaleme website reports that Abdi tried to board a plane to Armenia last week and only then did he realize he was under a foreign travel ban.
A number of teachers and activists gathered in front of Evin Prison office to show their solidarity with Abdi.
Esmail Abdi was given a 10-year suspended sentence for his involvement in teachers’ protests during the Mahmoud Ahmadinejad administration.
In recent weeks, Abdi reportedly has been threatened that if he stays as head of the Teachers’ Association, his prison sentence will be enforced.
In recent months, teachers have held widespread protests to seek wages commensurate with those of other public employees.
