Iranians customarily take to the roads during Norooz holidays and travel to various destinations. That means the holidays are often accompanied by a rise in road accidents.

Last year during the New Year holidays, 1,084 people were killed in road accidents.

Experts identify the chief causes of accidents as the high volume of traffic, inadequate roads, distracted drivers and high speeds.

Road accidents are among the three top causes of death in Iran, with 20,000 to 30,000 people dying in such accidents each year.

Official statistics indicate that since 1979, more than 800,000 people have died in road accidents in Iran.
