Iran’s intelligence minister has announced the arrest of a team attempting to engage in terrorist activities in southeastern Iran, adding that over 350 kilograms of explosives as well as arms were found in their possession along with homemade bombs and explosive vests.
Mahmoud Alavi reported on Saturday that the identification and arrest of the group was accomplished through a joint operation between the IRGC, Security Forces and the Ministry of Intelligence.
The intelligence minister was quoted as saying that the detainees have confessed to engaging in terrorist activities and killing a number of teachers.
Iranian authorities have not yet revealed the number of detainees or their identities.
Alavi stressed that both Sunnis and Shias were targets of the group, saying: “In Sistan-Baluchistan, these criminals target not only Shias but have also killed our Sunni brothers.”
In recent years, Sistan-Baluchistan has become a scene of repeated armed and fatal attacks, especially around its border with Pakistan. Many of these attacks were carried out by Jundallah and Jeysh-ol-Adl, groups that purport to fight for the rights of Sunnis in Iran.
