Flights from Abadan and Ahwaz in southwestern Iran have been cancelled due to poor visibility caused by increased dust in the air.
The Tasnim News Agency reports that the head of the Khuzestan Meteorology office said: “Rainfall has declined by 30 percent compared to last year and this is one of the main reasons for dry soil all across the province and the increase in airborne dust particles.”
The drying out of lakes and lagoons in the region is cited as one of the main reasons for the dust storms plaguing cities in Khuzestan.
The Khuzestan Crisis Management Centre has issued a warning to pregnant women, seniors and those suffering from respiratory diseases to avoid going out as much as possible.
Schools have cancelled their afternoon sessions in order to reduce traffic while the dust lingers.
