Iran cut from Asia Cup after razor-thin loss to Iraq

Iran was eliminated from the 16th round of the Asian Cup football championship, losing to Iran on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals.

The game score stood at 1-1 at the end of the 90 minutes and it went to 3-3 at the end of extra time. The Iranian team, which had played 80 minutes of the game with 10 players, lost at the end of the penalty kicks with a score of 9-10.

At the game’s 43-minute mark, Varya Ghafouri received a second yellow card from the referee for colliding with the goalkeeper and was suspended from the game.

Iran won the Asian Cup in 1968, 1972 and 1976 and came third in 1980, 1988, 1996 and 2004.

In this year’s semifinals, Iraq will face South Korea. The host team, Australia, has reached the semifinals and will face the winner of the game between Japan and UAE.
