Ghoncheh Qavami has been sentenced to one year in jail and a two-year ban on traveling abroad for the charge of “propaganda against the regime”.
Qavami was one of the women who sought to enter a stadium to watch a volleyball game in July and were briefly arrested in the process. Soon after, she was arrested again and charged with propaganda against the regime. Iranian authorities insist that her arrest and charge are not related to sports.
An unidentified source has told the Tasnim News Agency that Qavami was investigated for three charges: “assembly and collusion against national security”, “cooperation with the British government” and “propaganda activities against the regime.” According to this report, the first two charges against her were dropped and she was prosecuted and sentenced for the third charge.
