Iran slams EU renewing sanctions on University
Sharif University

The Iranian judiciary's Human Rights Commission has denounced the European Union's decision to once again impose sanctions on one of Iran's top universities, Sanati Sharif, describing it as a "violation of international rights."

IRNA reports that the Human Rights Commission has issued a statement claiming the EU move is a sanction on science and goes against fundamental EU principles.

The EU Treasury blacklisted Sanati Sharif University on November 8, just a few months after it had removed it from the same list.

Iran's statement says: "Any pressure or restriction on the rights of Iranian universities and higher education institutions and their staff is a violation of the international Convention against Discrimination in Education."

EU had blacklisted the university on the grounds that it was connected with the country's nuclear program, but the sanctions were lifted last July.

A spokeswoman for the Iranian foreign ministry also questioned today the motive behind the EU's move while talks are ongoing and in view of the interim deal put in place last November.
