The head of the Family of Martyrs and Veterans Association reported on Tuesday September 30 that a suit has been filed against Culture Minister Ali Jannati for issuing permits allowing women to sing solo in concerts.
In a report in the Etemad daily, Davood Barati said: “In a move against general decency, the sharia and the law, the Ministry of Culture and Guidance has made the unprecedented move of issuing a permit for a solo singing performance of women in Vahdat Hall, and in a letter, the Family of Martyrs and Veterans Association has informed the prosecutor with a recording of the event.”
In recent months, the judiciary has repeatedly made moves against the Rohani administration, challenging ministerial decisions. Most recently, the judiciary’s first deputy gave the minister of communications one month to block social networking sites such as Whatsapp and Viber. President Rohani has also been called on to convene the Supreme Council of Cyber Space to impose more controls on internet use.
The moves against Rohani oppose his policies of moderation and attempts to give the people a greater level of social freedom.
