Sirjan city councillors accused of corruption

Seven members of Sirjan City Council in Kerman Province have been arrested for “financial corruption.” The mayor and the council speaker are among the detainees.

The Etemad daily reported on Sunday September 28 that the detainees are charged with “squandering public property and city assets.”

The report adds that the annual budget of Sirjan Municipality is about 130 million toumans for the current year and large amounts of this budget are now missing.

The report goes on to say that one project to pave a city road was budgeted for 4 million toumans but it has now used up 50 million toumans without any accountability for the money spent.
