The Iranian cabinet has expressed concern regarding the country’s water shortage and made a serious appeal to the public to reduce water consumption, especially in the capital of Tehran.
Iranian vice president Eshagh Jahangiri said the water crisis needs to be taken seriously, adding that in the current year the problem has grown in magnitude, demanding an immediate response.
He added that a budget of ten billion dollars from the national development fund has been allotted to water and soil projects with the approval of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.
While the water shortage has been an ongoing problem, a severe decline in precipitation this year has made things worse, with two major dams running dry. Cabinet has approved the spending of three billion toumans to remedy the capital’s water shortage and transfer water from other dams.
The Ministry of Power’s constant calls to reduce water consumption appear to have fallen on deaf ears, forcing the government to temporarily cut off the flow of water to some high-volume consumers as a warning.
