Tuition fees at Azad University have been increased by 15 percent despite student protests. Students at every level have challenged the increase, according to the Fars News Agency, and referred to it as “illegal.”
The report says the students maintain that because of university regulations dating back to its establishment, the university has never applied tuition increases to students already enrolled in a program, but this year the increase affects all students.
Parliament’s Education and Research Commission has told Tasnim News Agency that any increase in tuition must comply with university regulations. The commission also reported that university administrators had been calling for a 30-percent increase in tuition, but the university board of directors rejected that, and the increase was reduced to 15 percent.
Ali Salimi, a member of Parliament’s Education and Research Commission, stressed that Parliament will not allow any violations of university regulations.
