Iranian health officials say they have identified a case of cholera infection in Tehran. The announcement indicates that the infected individual is an Afghan national who was sick upon entering Iran.
The Mehr News Agency reports that the individual was diagnosed with cholera by doctors and is currently receiving treatment. People who were in contact with the infected individual have been tested and found to be well, health officials report.
The report indicates that the Afghan national has confirmed that he entered Iran illegally through its eastern borders.
There were 100 cases of reported cholera in Iran annually from 2000 to 2005.
