Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says if the UN sanctions on Iran are not lifted, the nuclear negotiations will reach no resolution.
The Mehr News Agency reports that on Monday August 18 after a meeting with his Romanian counterpart in Tehran, Zarif said: “No resolution will reach the stage of implementation unless the 5+1 members implement their commitment to lifting UN sanctions.”
He stated that the 5+1 members themselves cannot lift UN sanctions but the five permanent members of the Security Council are “required to cancel sanctions in any agreement.” He added that one of the most important commitments of the 5+1 in the final agreement will be to approach the Security Council and lift sanctions through the available mechanisms.
Iran and the 5+1 are in the process of drafting a final comprehensive agreement, and the next meeting will take place between Catherine Ashton and Mohammad Javad Zarif in early September in order to set a date and venue for the next round of talks
