Iran's diplomatic efforts have secured the release of nine Iranian prisoners in Qatar. IRNA reports that the nine Iranian nationals have arrived in Iran.
Each of the released prisoners had been sentenced to between 10 and 20 years in jail for charges such as illegal entry into Qatari's territorial waters and “other reasons”, according to IRNA.
The report indicates that their imprisonment was due to their inability to pay the fines levied by Qatari authorities.
Local media in Bushehr Province have indicated that the people in question are “sailors”.
The foreign ministry has indicated that 11 more Iranian prisoners in Qatar will soon be released as well. There are currently 58 Iranian prisoners in Qatar.
