Iranian political prisoner Mehdi Mahmoudian was given a temporary leave on Saturday August 2. ILNA reports that Mahmoudian has been given a four-day furloiugh. Mahmoudian is a journalist and member of the reformist organization Islamic Iran Participation Front. He has been serving a five-year prison term in Rejai Shahr Prison.
Mehdi Mahmoudian is one of the journalists that reported on the Kahrizak Prison events in 2009 and he was arrested in September of that year and sentenced to five years in jail for assembly and collusion against the regime.
Election protesters were transferred to Kahrizak Prison in 2009, where they were tortured, and when news emerged that at least three detainees had died there, it led to the closure of the facility. Parents of the victims are still trying to bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice through legal channels; however, the Tehran Prosecutor at the time, who has been called the chief orchestrator of the transfer of the detainees to Kahrizak Prison, enjoys strong support among the conservative factions of the establishment and has so far eluded prosecution.
