Families, friends of Kahrizak victims call for justice

A gathering was held to mark the fifth anniversary of the victims of the Kahrizak Detention Centre, with families and activists calling for a follow-up into the deaths of the detainees in custody.

Mohammadreza Zaeri, who led the ceremony, said that those who caused this incident still have time to own up to their acts.

“The perpetrators need to come out of the shadows and be prosecuted,” Zaeri said.

ISNA reports that the ceremony was held on Thursday July 17 in Vali Asr Mosque with the families of Mohsen Ruholamini, Mohammad Kamrani and Amir Javadifar. Activists Mehdi Khazali and Narin Sotoudeh were also in attendance.

ISNA reports that according to the lawyer for the Ruholamini family, the case is still pending at court.

Former Tehran prosecutor Saeed Mortazavi is accused of transferring a number of detainees from the 2009 election protests to the Kahrizak Detention Centre, where they were severely tortured and three of them were killed: Mohsein Ruholamini, Mohammad Kamrani and Amir Javadifar.

Mortazavi enjoys strong support from conservative factions in the establishment and his prosecution has been characterized by much resistance.
