Weightlifter Kianoush Rostami has won Iran’s first medal at the London Olympics, taking the bronze medal in the men’s 85 kg weight category.
Rostami, 21, was in fifth position after the first half of the competition, which involved lifting in one continuous move, but he managed to recover in the clean and jerk. He finished third behind Russia’s Apti Aukhadov, who won the silver, and Poland’s Adrian Zielinski, who won the gold, lifting a total of 385 kilograms.
Another Iranian weightlifter, Sohrab Moradi, was eliminated from the competition at the 166 kg stage.
On the seventh day of competition, Iran is in 49th place on the medals board, a position it shares with seven other countries.
