Iran’s Agriculture sector reportedly consumes 92 percent of the country’s national water resources and wastes about two-thirds of that.

Iranian Power Minister Hamid Chitchian reports that irrigation has only a 33-percent yield, making the industry very wasteful.

The high water consumption has led to the serious depletion of water resources as well as land subsidence and population displacement.

IRNA reports that the head of Iran’s Waterworks says the annual consumption of well water has increased by 48 billion cubic metres and 70 percent of water resources have been depleted.
