Majid Tavakoli

Jailed student activist Majid Tavakoli has been given a furlough after four years in jail.

Kaleme reports that Tavakoli was released from Rejai Shahr Prison on bail of six million rials on the night of Monday October 21.

Tavakoli, an engineering student at Amir Kabir, was arrested in December of 2009 after giving a speech at a student protest.

He was charged with “assembly and collusion against the regime, propaganda against the regime, insulting the leader and insulting the president.”

The Revolutionary Court sentenced him to eight years in jail and a five-year ban from political activity and traveling abroad.

He was later given another six-month sentence for issuing an announcement from inside prison on the occasion of National Students Day.
