Mohammad Javad Zarif

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has travelled to Moscow to meet with his Russian counterpart regarding issues of mutual concern, including the Syrian conflicts.

IRNA reports that Zarif travelled to Moscow on Wednesday January 15 “for further discussions over mutual relations with Russia… and consultation over the nuclear issues and the final stages of negotiations between Iran and the 5+1.”

Russian media described Zarif’s trip to Moscow as a response to Sergey Lavrov’s earlier visit to Tehran, quoting the Russian minister saying that the two countries are engaged in “progressive talks on politics and economic relations.”

Meanwhile, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem is also visiting Moscow. Russia and Iran have both been supportive of the Beshar Assad government during the recent years of deadly conflicts in that country, and Russia is adamant that both Iran and Saudi Arabia should be involved in the Geneva 2 talks aimed at finding a path toward peace in that country.
