Mahmoud Alavi

Iran’s Minister of Intelligence says his country is not indifferent to issues regarding Iraq; however, he stressed that Iran will not interfere in Iraqi affairs.

The Central News Unit reports that Mahmoud Alavi said: “We have never interfered in Iraq and will never do so in the future and we support Iraq’s dignity and independence.”

He referred to the developments in Iraq as “a conspiracy” and said: “The enemies of the Iraqi people will not break their unity with such mayhem and push it toward disintegration.”

The so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Levant group has taken control of several Iraqi cities in the north and west of the country, and the Iraqi army is engaged in fighting against them.

There have been some reports of an Iranian military presence in Iraq, but the Iranian and Iraqi governments both have denied the reports.
