Justice minister calls acid attacks on women “terrorism”
Mostafa Pour Mohammadi

Iranian Justice Minister Mostafa Pour Mohammadi says throwing acid on women is an act of terrorism.

On the sidelines of a meeting in Tehran, the justice minister told reporters that authorities in Isfahan are thoroughly investigating the incidents of acid being thrown on women, adding that the actions were "acts of "sabotage and terrorism."

He added that the administration is seriously concerned about these incidents and is hopeful that the perpetrators will soon be arrested.

Last Wednesday, a woman in Isfahan was assaulted with acid thrown on her body while she was driving her car, according to eyewitness reports. She suffered severe burns on her hands and face and she is now being treated in hospital.

The authorities have confirmed the incidents and are hard at work trying to identify the culprits.

On Sunday another three women were targeted with acid on Isfahan streets. The attack led to one death; the other two are being treated for injuries at a hospital.

Unofficial reports maintain that the number of victims of acid throwing in Isfahan have now reached 15 and the Ministry of Interior made a statement on Monday that they have arrested four suspects in connection with the acid throwing incidents.

That report was however denied by the Deputy Head of Judiciary Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei who said while there have been no arrested, they were hard at work and would soon find the perpetrators.
